You run the cattle side of Kingston Place day to day: receiving, health, feeding, grazing, handling and the crew that does the work. It is a hands-on leadership job. You will work alongside our veterinarian of record, help choose and train your crew, and keep the records that show how the herd is doing. Candidates from outside Vermont are welcome.
The work
- Receive incoming cattle: check IDs and condition, assign groups and pastures, and document every arrival.
- Run daily feeding, water and health checks, and manage rations, stored feed and baleage inventory.
- Plan grazing rotations and forage production, including haying for winter feed.
- Carry out herd-health protocols with the veterinarian, including vaccinations, treatments, withdrawal times and treatment records.
- Lead sorting, loading and preparation for scheduled shipments to processing.
- Hire, train and supervise ranch hands and the equipment operator; set daily work and hold the crew to a clear standard.
- Keep fencing, water systems, handling facilities and equipment safe and working.
- Keep accurate records of cattle IDs, movements, health events, losses and feed, and report weekly to management.
What we’re looking for
- 5 or more years managing cattle on a ranch, in a feedlot or in a grazing operation.
- Experience supervising a crew.
- Sound cattle judgment and low-stress handling. BQA certification, or willingness to earn it within 30 days of starting.
- Working knowledge of feeding programs, forage production and stored feed.
- Comfort operating and doing basic repairs on tractors, loaders, hay and feeding equipment, chutes and trailers.
- Organized record keeping, on paper and in simple software.
- Grass-fed, regenerative or other forage-based systems.
- Managing cattle or crews across more than one property.
- Finishing-phase experience.
- Four-season operations in New England or a similar climate.
Outdoor, physically demanding work in every season, with long hours during haying, receiving and shipping periods.
$75,000 to $85,000 per year, an annual performance bonus tied to herd and operating goals, and employer-provided housing.
A phone screen, interviews with Kingston Place leadership, a day on site working cattle and equipment with us, reference checks, then a written offer.
