Food-animal veterinary coverage in this part of Vermont is thin, so we are bringing it in-house. As veterinarian of record you set the protocols, hold the veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR), train the people who carry out treatments and make the medical calls. You get one operation to focus on, a herd-health program to build from the start, and management that wants it done right.
The work
- Establish and maintain the VCPR for all Kingston Place cattle.
- Design the herd-health program: receiving protocols for incoming cattle, vaccination, parasite control, treatment and biosecurity.
- Set up and oversee medication and pharmacy controls, withdrawal tracking and treatment records.
- Examine, diagnose and treat sick or injured cattle, and respond to herd emergencies.
- Train and supervise ranch staff on handling, observation and treatment protocols, within veterinary scope rules.
- Work with the ranch manager and nutrition advisors on feeding, health trends and death-loss investigations.
- Complete health certificates and other paperwork for cattle movement.
- Report herd-health trends and program results to management.
What we’re looking for
- A DVM or VMD degree, or an equivalent recognized in the United States.
- A Vermont veterinary license, or eligibility and willingness to obtain one before you start.
- USDA accreditation (Category II), or willingness to obtain it.
- Bovine or food-animal practice experience, ideally with beef cattle.
- Experience with production medicine or herd-health programs.
- The ability to teach and lead people who are not veterinarians.
- Setting up or managing VCPRs for large operations.
- Cow-calf, stocker or feedlot herd-health programs.
- Pharmacy, withdrawal and residue-avoidance systems.
- Delivering Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training.
Field work with cattle, chutes and handling facilities in every season, with some evenings and weekends for emergencies.
$150,000 to $160,000 per year, incentive compensation and on-site housing. Incentive pay uses a balanced scorecard and never rewards withholding medically indicated treatment.
A phone screen, interviews with Kingston Place leadership, a clinical and herd-health systems conversation, a site visit, reference and license checks, then a written offer.
